Macau boosts e-pay options to drive traveller spending
By Aries Un
Tourism authorities in Macau are doubling down on efforts to promote the city as an electronic-payment-friendly destination, a government release said on Monday.
The Macau Government Tourism Office said that collaborations with mainstream e-platform operators from multiple vital markets began in the second quarter of 2026, with discounts and promotions rolled out in tandem to stimulate tourism spending in the special administrative region.
The major contactless payment operators listed in the Monday announcement included Naver Pay in South Korea, TrueMoney in Thailand, and AlipayHK in Hong Kong.
The authorities said that South Korea remained Macau’s top international market.
According to the Statistics and Census Service, South Korean visitation for the first quarter of the year totalled 184,938, which accounts for about 1.65 per cent of the Q1 total of 11.21 million.
This suggested a rise of 7.36 per cent from the same period in 2025.
The partnership with Naver Pay, or simply Npay, spans the period between May and December.
South Korean travellers are encouraged to leverage this platform for a wide range of consumption discounts, which are currently being promoted through online advertisements, marketing strategies, and lifestyle magazines.
These endeavours are also synchronised with a multimedia campaign promoting Macau’s attractions.
Celebrity Park Jin-young, 32, was also invited to promote the special administrative region to his fans.
Macau attracted a total of 59,811 travellers from the Thai market between January and March, with this number rising 70.5 per cent on the previous year.
The TrueMoney collaboration, also running from May to December, revolves around similar incentives. However, these cover not only Macau but also neighbouring Zhuhai.
This year sees the return of the online Macau Wonder campaign for the Southeast Asian market, featuring discounted Macau travel products from Thai agencies.
This initiative also offers airfare and hotel booking discounts in a bid to boost overall reservations.
Additional efforts are being contributed by TrueMoney, which has launched a coordinated marketing campaign through its social media, mobile app, and network of influencers.
In the second half of 2026, Macau’s tourism office will initiate another partnership with a Thai telecoms carrier, providing airfare discounts.
The authorities will also partner with online travel agencies to place advertisements, offer ticket promotions, and invite Thai idol Chayapak Tunprayoon to Macau for filming.
As for the Hong Kong market, the authorities held the Macau Summer Market there at the end of May. Additionally, several travel agencies have been contracted to sell Macau’s tourism offerings.
A pipeline of campaigns has already been earmarked for the July–October period, with themed promotional activities to be held in cooperation with Hong Kong’s travel information websites.
Some of these campaigns are tied to AlipayHK incentives.
According to the Monetary Authority of Macau, as of June this year, Macau businesses can accept a wide range of payment methods, including eight local Simple Pay services.
On top of WeChat Pay, Alipay, and their Hong Kong versions, international e-wallets from South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Mongolia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and Vietnam are also accepted in Macau.
